The Journey

The Road to Kona

About

An all-in commitment.

I'm Reese Northen, a triathlete, coach, and mechanical engineering student at the University of Colorado Boulder.

I grew up racing BMX and playing hockey before discovering weightlifting my senior year of high school. I had never swum or run. When I got to college, I wanted a bigger challenge and found triathlon. What started as a new sport quickly became an obsession. I immersed myself in the science of training, nutrition, recovery, and performance, always wanting to understand not just what works, but why.

I started triathlon in January 2025 with no endurance background. Fifteen months later, I qualified for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, finishing Ironman Texas, the North American Championship, in 9:15. From a sub-5-hour 70.3 in six months to a 9:30 Ironman in just eleven months, I've experienced firsthand what can happen when you fully commit to a goal, and I love helping others do the same.

Engineering has shaped the way I coach. I enjoy understanding how things work, breaking down complex problems, and finding the most effective path forward. Every athlete starts somewhere. My job is to understand where you're starting, where you want to go, and build the best path to get you there.

The biggest challenge I've overcome hasn't been racing. It's been balancing a full-time mechanical engineering course load, an engineering internship, coaching, and 22-plus-hour training weeks. That experience has taught me that extraordinary goals are possible with consistency, discipline, and commitment.

My mission is simple: to inspire others and show them they're capable of far more than they think.
